It's So Random

What to say....

What to say, what to say...

I've been trying to blog every day, but honestly, most days I don't think I really have enough to say to make up a whole post.  Today is no exception.  So we'll see how it goes.

Zoey

Happy Birthday to Zoey!  It is Zoey's birthday today.  I officially have four teenagers right now, at least until AJ turns 20 in November.  Right now, our ages are 23, 19, 17, 15, 13, 5.  All odds.  Soon, we start turning to all evens.  And then I will only have three teenagers.  Three teenage girls.  Please, wish me luck.

Guy girl performance 008

It was also Lilly's Birthday this last week!  Happy Birthday, Lilly!!  I really can't believe that this time next year she will be getting ready to leave home for college.  Freakin' me out a little.

Jane posted today about her favorite books when she was growing up.  She asked what were our favorites.  We have several on the same list: Encyclopedia Brown (of which I read them all!), Little House on the Prarie Books, The Great Brain (introduced to me by my grandmother), The Hardy Boys, Harriet the Spy, Mandy, Charlotte's Web, The Little's, From the Mixed Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler, Winnie the Pooh.  Oh my.  It makes me want to go on a wild rampage of the young adult section of the library.  Fun.

Speaking of which: checked out from the library now, The Zookeeper's Wife, and The Ghost Map.  Both old bookclub books that I haven't read yet.

My netflix movies: Red Skelton: Greatest Clown, Disc One and Two.  FUNNY!

Last movie seen, Wall-E.  Good movie!  Tess loved it and so did I.

Last book read: Train to Potevka.  Umm, only so-so.

Favorite show right now: Burn Notice

I think I'm scrapping the bottom of the barrel.  So that's it for me.

Sunday meandering.

Today I went to all three hours of my own ward for the first time in 5 weeks.  Yikes!  Lest you think I'm going inactive, no.  I just have been going to different wards for farewells, and homecomings.  Plus we were gone on vacation for a week.  It was a good church day.  I enjoyed it.

When I was checking blogs today, I stopped by Jill's blog.  If you have not gone there today and seen her Sunday Thoughts post, please do.  The video she has posted there is very inspiring, and made my day complete.  I'm trying to figure out how I can take it off the computer and give it to all the teenagers that I know.  It has some very powerful words on it, something for everyone.  Please, watch it.

We have been babysitting a five month old baby for the past three days.  Her mother is a single mom and wanted to take her other children on a little vacation without the distraction of the baby.  Well.  I can honestly say, that I'm not at all ready to have grandchildren.  I'm enough out of babyhood that I'm totally out of practice, but not far enough out that I don't remember what it's like.  But she has been a good baby, and the girls have loved having her around.  But they also see that they do not want to have a baby at a young age.  One of them told me that she doesn't want to have any kids until she's over 21.  I'm good with that.  The honeymoon's over after you have children.  Well, for me anyway.

For all that might be wondering, my computer is doing well again.  Thank you for thinking of me.

Elder AJ has hit his 8 month mark.  I need to quit thinking about it.  It is making the time go slow again.  Poor guy.  If I think about it, I'm much better about sending letters, packages, etc.  If I don't think about it, time goes much faster, but he doesn't get a thing from home.  I'll probably just have to suffer through it.  He needs something from home.

I'm going to take a nap.  Midnight feedings do not agree with me.

Love, me.

Woe is me.

Dear People,

I'm perturbed beyond perturbed.  My computer is having woes AGAIN!!  I cannot tell you how irritated I am right now, so I will just tell you that I'm going to try desperate to finish another one of my severly over due books tonight.

I hope I'm not missing any exciting blog action.

Love, me.

Not too much going on.

* Today, I finished all my Booster Club stuff!!!  Yea for me!!  You cannot even imagine how happy I am about that!  Now if I could just finish the swim meet stuff I need to put together and the the girls camp stuff.  Only one more day.  Yikes!

* I am really having a hard time with this whole going to Vegas thing!  In case you don't know, my son is on a mission in Las Vegas right now, as we speak!  He has been gone almost 8 months.  8 months!!  Crazy.  I was doing really well with it until just now.  Now, I feel like I'm going to burst into tears at any moment, thinking that I will be in the same city as him, but not able to see him.  Oh my.  I hope I can do this.

*  Terry fixed my van and I'm so happy about that!

*  Just so you know, I'm watching tv right now as I'm typing this.  I hope it doesn't sound disjointed.

*  This week has been so quiet.  No dance, no swim, no anything.  I kinda like it, but then again, they are in my face a whole lot.

*  Sarafina, the boy cat with a girl name, has decided to come in the house, which is okay at the time, but he (she) has been finding little hiding spots where we don't see him and then we shut the house up and he is stuck inside.  Funny.  He hasn't had any accidents in the house yet and actually gets a little uptight when we shut the door and close him in.  I'm liking him.

That's all I got.

Love, me.

Only for Deborah

My niece-in-law, Deborah, has tagged me to do a meme.  Ahhhh.  I would ONLY do this for you, Deborah.  I just hope I can think my way through this.

What was I doing ten years ago:  Ten years ago, we had just moved into this house, I was raising my five screaming children, all the normal stuff.

What was I doing five years ago:  I had a six month old baby, and a graduate.  That is weird.

What was I doing five months ago:  Five months ago.  What month is that?  Let's see, that would be February, which is high dance competition and drill team competition time.  We were getting ready for Nationals.  Other than that, just plugging along in everyday life.

Five things on my to-do list:  (1) Must finish library books that are already ONE MONTH LATE!  (2) Must write thank you's for people that remembered my birthday.  (3)  Start packing up stuff for scrapbook retreat.  (4)  Find miscellanous jobs to keep children busy all summer.  (5)  Finish reading the Book of Mormon before Stake Conference this weekend (almost there!)

Five snacks I enjoy:  (1) Watermelon with salt   (2) Chips and Salsa  (3)  Sno-cones  (4) Pumpkin Bars  (5)  Popcorn

Five things I would do if I were suddenly a billionaire:  Sorry, can't even go here with our current financial situation.

Five bad habits:  (1) Eat too much junk  (2)  Fall asleep saying my prayers (so rude!)  (3)  Wear the same socks two days in a row  (4)  Horrible at making phone calls  (5) Interrupt people *cringe*.

Five places I have lived:  (1) Ephrata  (2) Provo   (3)  Seattle   (4)  Moses Lake  (5)  ???  Where will we end up next!

Five jobs I have had:  (1) tree nursery field worker (my entire teenhood), (2) custodian  (3) cafeteria worker  (4) house cleaner  (5) nanny

That's it for me!  Did you find out something you didn't know before?

Emptying my head

I just have all these random thoughts in my head so I'm just gonna spill 'em.

  • Oh people!  It's scrapbook retreat next week and I'm ready to get out of here.  Not that I don't love my kiddos but this year has been really hard on me and I"m ready for a little break.
  • Are you watching "So You Think You Can Dance"?  Oh my.  You should be.  There isn't anyone that is weak among the contestants.  I have several favorites, Kherington, Kourtni, Will, but my favorite is Chelsie Hightower.  Why is she my favorite?  Because her brother is on a mission and he is a friend of my son's from in the MTC!!  He is on his mission here in the Spokane Mission and was trained here in Moses Lake!  I love that boy.  She could be the worst one out there and I'd be cheering her on.  All for you E. Hightower!
  • Lilly has to be in a parade this weekend in my hometown.   The chairwoman asked me if I wanted to drive the car she is riding in (dang float people!) and I just thought to myself, I just don't think I could do that and have all the people of my childhood staring at me.  Ugh.
  • There are days when I love the big sycamore tree in our front yard, but right now it is driving me crazy!!  It drops these little dingle balls all over our yard and you have to pick them up before you can mow.  And so it has become Tess' job to clean up the yard everyday and let me tell you!  The wailing and gnashing of teeth is incredible.  It's going to be a long summer.
  • They are remodeling our Walmart right now and if it wasn't a zoo before it really is now!  Doing magazines right now is so...  I don't even have a word to describe it.  So today, I go in to do mags and there is all these new workers running around like chickens, etc.  So I'm talking to some of the workers I do know, and they tell me that over Memorial day weekend, a customer that came to the store had the measles and had exposed everyone there.  Really, everyone.  Hmmm.  So every employee that was there on the TWO days had to either prove they had a measles shot, or go and get re-vaccinated, or stay home for three days until proven not to have the measles.  Oh. My. Gosh.  Isn't that a bit nuts?!  That's the health dept. by the way, not Walmart.  They aren't happy either.
  • It's Friday the 13th today.  Be very careful.
  • Tomorrow is the 14th.  Does anyone know what that means?

That's about it for me.  I'm sure I have something else to say soon.

Love, Me

May 17, 2008

Yikes! Time flies!

Well.  It has been a week.  I'm not sure what happened to me, except I was all kinds of busy.  Still, I was on the computer so I guess I really should have done a post or two.  Someday.  Someday, I'll get it all together.  It seems just not this week.

So here goes for another Seven for Saturday, only in daily fashion:

Sunday:  Oh, Mother's Day!  As a young mother, I always felt bad about Mother's Day.  Sacrament meeting was a lesson in humility, as I listened to talk after talk about all the super mom's in my ward, then seeing the super mom's families of perfectly dressed children, all done up with perfectly done hair, and their talks of being so happy to receive that *awful* gift from their children that they had made at school.  And here I was, with my boys looking like they had pulled their white shirts out from under the bed (which they had) and the girls, of course in matching dresses, but with hair looking like the Scarecrow's.  And the fighting.  Aagh!  The fighting! Oh the guilt of it all!  Then I went to an Education Week class by John Lund.  He told me the sweetest thing!  If you lose all your expectations, you won't have any frustrations!  From that point on, I don't mind Mother's Day.  I've given up all expectations of what would be an "ideal" Mother's Day, and just gone with whatever happens on Mother's Day is great.  I'm okay with that.  I've also given up what I think I should be doing to be the "ideal" daughter and granddaughter.  I've come to peace with the fact that I'm not perfect, and I'm never going to be.  I can do what I can do.  Now, that being said, (Whew, that was long!)  Mother's Day for a missionary mom is pure, pure gold!  I talked to my Missionary!!  Oh, he sounds good!  We talked about how fast time is going (6 months) and how he is keeping a good attitude during a very trying transfer, and how he is being blessed for that good attitude and hard work.  Oh, he sounds good.  I miss my boy.

Monday:  I started making the tickets for our dance recital.  I think I've mentioned a time or thirty, that I work for our dance studio to pay off my tuition.  I do all the crafty details that they need done, and run interference at performances and such.  Not to strenous.  So tickets, 3 shows, 500 tickets each, 10 tickets per sheet of cardstock... you do the math.  Ugh.  I printed out 150 sheets of cardstock and am even now in the process of cutting them out to sell.  As it is quite a process, you will see me with my bag of cutting board, ticket sheets, rubberbands, and container to keep cut tickets in, everywhere I go.  If there's a spare minute, I'm setting up camp, and bringing it all out.  So far it has served me well, and I'm done cutting out the tickets for one show.  Only two more to go!

Tuesday:  My sweet, sweet 100 (and 2/3) year old Grandma had to have surgery.  She had a blockage in her bile duct and she was SO jaundice.  She was not just yellow, but almost completely orange!  She said to me, "I know I'm yellow now, but I couldn't see myself before, so I didn't know."  Wow, Grandma, get someone to come in and look at you once in a while.  Her lovely, lovely hairdresser, Eileen, came to get her to do her hair, and said, "Maxene, you are a little yellow," which in fact was a huge under statement, she will freely admit, but she didn't want to alarm my grandma.  I love Eileen!  She is a great lady.  *Anyway*, so dear Grandmama had to have surgery.  The doctors said they will do surgery on someone this old under two circumstances.  One, that they are able to withstand the procedure, and two, if it will make the person more comfortable in their daily life.  So, my grandma, a pretty tough ole bird, is a candidate for that because she fits the requirement.  Problem, they can't do the surgery ANY WHERE near to where my grandma lives because her home town is so small.  She had to travel two hours to the nearest "big" hospital for the surgery.  My grandma hasn't been that far away from her house in I don't know how long.  We were all a little worried.  Problem, her doctor can't perform the surgery.  He isn't a surgeon.  So new doctor.  Grandma not confident.  Yikes.  The town they went to is only a couple hours away from where I live, so I went down with my dad, her son, and helped get her ready for the surgery.  It was wonderful to be able to serve her a little, as she has served me most of my life.  The surgery went well, except for the small problem of when they went to remove the "stone" that was supposedly blocking the duct, they instead found a cancerous tumor.  Whoa.  Didn't see that coming.  The cancer is the kind that is really slow growing, and so the doctor put in a shunt that will keep the duct open so no more yellow, but will not do a surgery to take out the cancer.  Too invasive for 100 years old, and really, how much longer does she want to live?  NOT LONG!! (Remember how she is the one that always is mad when someone else dies before her. *Rolling of eyes*)  We were all a little worried how Grandma was going to take this news, but really she was like, Yes!  I only have to live another couple of years.  Well, good for you.  Taking the high road on that one.

Wednesday:  Playing catch up all day with laundry, dishes, lunch, etc.  For lunch, we had breakfast.  I love breakfast for lunch.  Bacon, pancakes, french toast.  And I have rediscovered scones.  You know the kind, fried bread dough kind.  OH, yum.  The kids totally enjoyed that and luckily, I had about a lot of food, because I had 20 kids here today.  20 kids.  I sewed at my sisters house for a couple of hours.  We made the banner for Mr. Moses Lake (Friday!) I also went to bed early with a migraine.  That is two days in a row this week, and I had two in a row last week.  Weird.

Thursday:  Not much new here.  Work, home, clean.  I had to work at the studio selling recital stuff.  Long night.  I was there until 7:00, then home to make candy kisses roses for the bouquets for Mr. Moses Lake (that's Friday).  Then to bed.

Friday:  Work in the morning, then lunch with the kids.  OK, is the weather we having just a little weird?  It went from being around 65-ish, to being in the 90's.  Crazy.  So for lunch, we had taco soup, in 90^ weather.  Sorry guys!  It was all I had!  After lunch, I went to lunch with my Very Good Friends, Cindy and Lori.  This is for you Jill.  I had what I always have, a bagel sandwich.  (She always describes what she has for lunch.  Mine was just not that exciting, but oh, so delicious.)   After lunch, it was home to finish bouquets, and make a sceptre for the big pageant.  Mr. Moses Lake is actually a spoof on pageants where a bunch of senior boys are chosen to compete pageant-style for the sceptre, umm, title of Mr. Moses Lake.  This is NOT, I repeat, NOT a scholarship pageant.  (Okay, that was a stab at Jr. Miss and I really shouldn't do that, but I can't help myself.  Sometimes, they get a little sanctimonious.)  People, can I just say, oh my.  That was the funniest thing I have ever seen, and I loved every minute of it.  We had eight contestants and they were awesome!  AWESOME!!  The boys took it seriously to be funny, and that is exactly what we needed.  So great.  I took a million pictures and I'll post some, because really, you have got to see this.  Funny.

Saturday:  Today, catch up blog, catch up booster club, catch up dishes, catch up laundry.  It's a catch up kind of day.

Until next time,

Love, me.

Saturday Seven

~I made homemade hot pockets for lunch again this week.  I got the recipe from Neighbor Jane Payne on her blog (February 20, 2008).  The first time I made these, it wasn't too successful.  Not because they didn't turn out, but because one batch of bread dough didn't make very many and I have many hungry mouths to feed.  (Dang locusts)  This last time I made them, I made several batches of bread dough and I had many hot pockets.  Yea for me!  They went over very well and it is definitely going to be on the rotation. The only problem I have with them though, is that they do takeme most of the morning to make them.  It's all good though.  A question for Jane though, have you tried to freeze them?

~Megan is gainfully employed!  She passed her interview this last week and will be a lifeguard at the pool this summer.  She went with her dad and got a bank account yesterday.  Oh, my little girl getting all grown up.  I wish her sister had the same aspirations.  It's just fortunate for Meg that the pool needs lots of lifeguards and she just happens to like to swim.  It's unfortunate for Lilly that the dance studio doesn't need that many teachers and so she only gets two hours a week to teach.  Little hours, little pay, bummer for mother and daughter.

~Speaking of Lilly, she and I made the cutest thank you cards for her to send out.  It was totally a copy of Tracy's card with a few minor changes.  They did turn out pretty cute though and make me wnat to make more cards.  I also had to make cards for the Mia Maids class to copy at my house this last week, and so even more wanting to make cards.  I'm so waiting for a spare minute to do this.  I guess that is the problem.  There is no such thing as a spare minute.  Maybe I shouldn't blog so much and do some cards instead.  Naaahhhhh.  (By the way, pictures to come later)

~My husband is the most wonderful husband ever.  I wanted Tacos de Asada for my Mother's Day dinner, but didn't really want to get dressed and go to the restaurant. So he ordered it for takeout for me.  I love that man.  My favorite dinner in my jammies at home.

~Unemployment rolls on.  I can't even talk about it anymore because I'm just so whiny about it and our goal is to "bear it well" as the scriptures says.  Can't. Even. Go. There.

~I'm enjoying looking at my son's and all his friends blogs.  What a fresh view!  It does drive him a little crazy though when I comment on the blogs.  He's like, dude, mom, don't comment on my friends blogs.  It's so embarrassing.  Actually, he said that when I sent a message to one of his friends on facebook.  Sorry, Ty.  I like to be involved in some form or another in my children's lives and this is all I've got right now.  Of course, I'm not putting his blog name out there because I'm not sure I want my friends to go see what he has to say.  Sometimes, it's a little embarrassing.  But just a little.

~I'll be going on another crafting terror soon.  Like later tonight.  I'll be posting pictures later.  Hopefully.  That's all I'm promising.

Until later.

Love, me.

Listen up Van!

It's an unfortunate fact that I have a little habit of talking to inanimate objects like they are alive.  (Remember the chair that I would introduce to Terry every time we went to Walmart) (and my dishwasher which I was always sure Terry was going to offend by his rinsing off the dishes before he put them in) but I've about done myself in.

My brakes are squeaking really bad.  Finally, I couldn't take anymore so I called Midas.  I'm not even kinding!  As soon as I got off the phone from making the appointment to have them check, the brakes quit squeaking!!  Are you kidding me?!  I knew the van had heard me and didn't want to be "checked out" so it just quit doing it.  See how my mind works.

As things go, I was late getting to the car appointment because of some unfortunate things going on, such as the fact that I had lunch to fix. So when I got there, I was a little distracted thinking beyond that moment and on to the next thing that I needed to do.  Well, when I went in, the man behind the desk says, Now what are we seeing the car for, and me, not thinking, say, the brakes were squeaking but as soon as the van heard me make the appointment, it stopped doing it.  I'm sure it doesn't want to be here.

The man just looked at me.  I looked at the man.  Then I realized what I said.  I couldn't help myself.  I just started laughing.  Oh my.  What do you say after you say something like that, and the man thinks you are serious?  I tried to laugh it off and tell him I didn't really think that the van could understand me, but you know, he wasn't buying it.

After the mechanic had looked at the brakes and given them a clean bill of health, because, you know, they weren't squeaking anymore, the man behind the counter, who thinks I'm crazy, says, "Um, I don't know what was causing them to squeak, but they, um, seem to be find now."  Honestly, people.  He was looking at me, like any moment I was going to pull a gun on him and tell him the building was telling me to do evil things.  Oh my.

And now I just have to tell you that the MINUTE we went out of the parking lot, the brakes started squeaking again.  Now, what do you think?  The van listens to me, doesn't it?
